Ever since he was knee-high to a Panthercap Michael has been passionate about wildlife and conservation. His childhood was immersed in the Devon countryside and since moving to Sussex he has gained almost twenty years’ experience of the incredible diversity of wildlife and habitats found in this county.
Michael has worked and volunteered for a number of wildlife conservation organisations in Sussex where he has helped tens of thousands of people to explore, understand, appreciate and celebrate their amazing wildlife heritage.
These days he’s going it alone, and continues his work as @thesussexnaturalist. He leads a busy programme of guided wildlife walks and education courses across Sussex and runs wildlife engagement events for community groups and schools. He undertakes wildlife surveys for landowners and organises his own ‘Secret Wildlife Festival’ each year. All details at michaelblencowe.com.
His passion and wildlife knowledge have taken him all over the globe. He’s discussed Swifts on Countryfile, Swallowtails on Springwatch and herbalism in a Harry Potter documentary. Michael co-wrote ‘The Butterflies of Sussex’ (2017) and collaborated with children's author Julia Donaldson on her book ‘The Woolly Bear Caterpillar’. His latest book ‘Gone – A search for what remains of the world’s extinct creatures’ was a British Trust for Ornithology ‘Book of the Year’ and isn’t as depressing as it sounds.
But most of all, he’s still very proud of winning the award for ‘Lewes Personality of the Year 2012’.
We’re excited to welcome the following incredible contributors to this year’s All Things Fungi Festival.
