How it works

1. Curiosity & Enthusiasm

• Passion shown through self-initiated exploration (e.g., mushroom forays, microscopy, fungi journals)
• Evidence of creative questioning: original observations or experiments

2. Learning & Skill-Building

• Engagement with structured activities
• Completion of micro‑projects: home experiments, small-scale cultures, fungal ID challenges

3. Evidence of Exploration

• Keeping a field or lab notebook with notes, photos, sketches, annotated samples
• Presenting findings informally: blogs, Instagram fungus diaries, school science fairs

4. Growing Knowledge

• Learning through inclusion in school clubs, online courses, mushroom walks, webinars
• Having a basic fungal taxonomy list or simple identification guides

5. Initiative & Engagement

• Participating in community events: citizen science (trailing submissions), peer fungal ID help
• Involvement in or organizing fungal-related activities at school, publications created

6. Communication & Outreach

• Sharing what they learn—drawing, presentations, informal talks at home or school
• Writing short blog posts, making mushroom posters, or sharing identification tips

7. Potential & Attitude

• Showing motivation, resilience, curiosity, and a desire to learn more
• Demonstrating teamwork

Terms and Conditions

1. Eligibility

• Under 18, previous year winner can not apply.
• Nominees will have to attend the festival on the Sunday with a parent or guardian‍
