Panel discussion: Pathways into Mycology, Careers, and Citizen Science
Fungi underpin life on Earth, yet mycology remains one of the most underrepresented fields in science. This panel brings together researchers, conservationists, educators and creatives to explore how more people can find their way into working with fungi.
Hosted by Joni Wildman, a PhD researcher at the University of Bath and co-leader of the British Mycological Society Early Career Group, the discussion is shaped by her own journey into the field. After studying physics at Cambridge, Joni realised she wanted to become a mycologist and made the shift into fungal research. This experience now motivates her to encourage others to follow their interest in fungi.
Panellists include Matt Wainhouse Senior Fungi expert from Natural England, April Windle, a lichen specialist and educator, Danielle, researcher and founder of The Culturing Dish, David Satori, a PhD researcher in mycorrhizal ecology, and Kit Ondaatje Rolls, a biodesigner and author.
The session will explore key questions. What does it mean to be a mycologist? Do you need formal training or can passion and curiosity lead the way? What roles exist across research, policy, conservation and the arts? And how can citizen science and grassroots networks shape the future of the field?
